What’s a skill you consider basic, that most people don’t actually know how to do?
One fundamental skill that I firmly believe is essential, yet often underestimated, is the ability to engage in independent thinking. It’s a skill that, when cultivated, can be surprisingly simple to develop, provided individuals make a genuine effort to nurture it. However, it’s disheartening to note that a staggering 90 percent of the global population seems to struggle with this vital ability.
From an early age, education systems worldwide frequently condition young minds through a process that can be described as indoctrination. Rather than encouraging critical thinking and fostering an environment where questioning and curiosity are welcomed, many schools promote a form of passive learning. This approach often stifles creativity and originality, leading students to adopt a mindset that lacks the rigorous analytical skills necessary for personal and societal progress.
To make matters worse, we are led to believe that common sense, which is a powerful tool for problem-solving and decision-making, is rendered insignificant. Instead of emphasizing the importance of robust critical thinking, we learn to rely on rote memorization and conformity to established norms. This results in a populace that may excel at following instructions but struggles when faced with the need to approach problems with an innovative mindset.
By embracing the concept of thinking for oneself, individuals can break free from these restrictive mental frameworks. The journey toward independent thought involves questioning assumptions, analyzing information critically, and recognizing the value of one’s own perspectives. It is only through this courageous act of self-directed thinking that we can unlock our true potential and contribute meaningfully to the complex challenges of our world. Therefore, I urge everyone to take the time to cultivate this foundational skill, as it can lead to profound personal growth and societal advancement.
