My Vision for the Future: Witnessing Puerto Rico’s Journey to Statehood

What’s something you’d love to see in the future, but know you probably won’t live to witness?

Because I’m of Puerto Rican descent, one compelling vision I hold for the future is the possibility of Puerto Rico achieving statehood. Imagine a time when this vibrant island, with its rich cultural heritage and diverse population, becomes an official state within the United States. The thought fills me with excitement and hope, as I believe that it could bring about a new chapter of growth and opportunity for its residents.

I can’t help but feel optimistic about my lifespan and the likelihood of experiencing this historical transition firsthand. Just like the wise and whimsical character Jiminy Cricket, who confidently asserts that he expects to live to the age of 93—because let’s face it, he’s no fool!—I share a similar sentiment about my own longevity. There’s a certain magic in the air when imagining a future where Puerto Rico is fully integrated and recognized as a state, not just in name but in the rights and privileges that come with it.

This transformational shift could pave the way for greater resources and support for the island, fostering not only economic growth but also stability and political representation for the Puerto Rican people. In envisioning this future, I feel a sense of empowerment for those who have long dreamed of this possibility. Yes, I wholeheartedly believe that I, too, will witness this monumental milestone in my lifetime, standing alongside Puerto Ricans as they celebrate their rightful place in the union. Isn’t it exhilarating to think about what lies ahead?
